My engine is a 1098cc A+ with a pre verto clutch. Because my old inertia starter was dead, I decided to switch to a pre engaged one. I changed the ring gear on my flywheel and took a 129T instead.
the starter recently started grinding on our 86 d100 at start up. It is progressively getting worse.. once I turn the key, it sounds like it is grinding against the flywheel and won't turn the motor over. Is there any way I can clean the starter, or replace some parts inexpensively?

Also, really dig in and make sure that your battery cables, including the one that connects to the starter, aren't corroded past the end that is obvious. If you have multiple starters that aren't advancing the Bendix then it sounds like a low voltage situation. That's usually caused by bad cables, or the solenoid.

I have what I described above with mine. The PO had it replaced, and it was grinding so I tried another reman with the same results.
If the starter is turning the motor over real fast I would not worry about the battery. Or you could have the battery load tested. If the starter is crashing into the flywheel and then turning the motor over it will give you a grinding noise. I would get a pack of shims out of the help section and install one of the thinner ones and keep going ...

A bad starter will kill a battery real quick. If you can find a DC amp-meter compare it to factory specs, or similar car starters. A bad starter will make a grinding noise, or give false tries where the starter spins free without engaging the motor. Of course, a bad starter will not spin at all, just make sure the relay is working.

Make sure the bolts and the mounting pads where they ride are clean. Make sure there are no washers on the bolts of any kind. Now reinstall the bolts and lightly snug them down. If not, the cost of repairing your starter and simply replacing the starter is about the same due to the added labor time required to take yours apart and replace the bad part. The starter clutch cost about $120 US. Once you get the starter off, there is about another hour labor to replace the clutch. Good luck. Steve.
